CNN’s Jim Acosta on NFL Protests: Trump Is ‘Pleased With This Uproar He’s Ignited’
NFL players protesting the national anthem is President Donald Trump’s new culture war of choice — and CNN’s Jim Acosta says the nation’s leader is very “pleased” with the way this issue has polarized America.
While appearing on Anderson Cooper 360, Acosta reported that the president has expressed pleasure in seeing this drama escalate as it takes over sports, politics, and media:
“Last night, Anderson, he did have a dinner with leaders of the conservative movement over here at the White House. It was during that meeting by one of the attendees in the room that the president said a couple of times, ‘this has really caught on, this is really caught on.’ He went on to say he’s essentially saying what a lot of Americans are thinking, according to this person in the room who was at this dinner last night with the president. He seemed pretty pleased with this uproar he’s ignited.”
Acosta’s comments go hand-in-hand with Trump’s decision today to continue his double-down on the controversy, as he told reporters during a press conference he has “plenty of time on my hands” to deal with the “very important issue.”
The president also advised the NFL to implement a league-wide rule banning all kneeling during the national anthem. “I think it is very important for the NFL to not allow people to kneel,” said Trump.
Though, despite tweeting about the national anthem controversy 24 times in the past few days, Trump swears that he is not obsessed with the issue.
