CNN’s John Avlon Brutally Mocks Bill de Blasio: ‘Palpable Lack of Excitement on the Streets of New York’
CNN’s John Avlon took a less than optimistic view of Bill de Blasio’s 2020 run on Thursday as he talked to New Day about the New York City mayor’s announcement.
In a conversation on New Day, the former speechwriter for Mayor Rudy Giuliani broke down de Blasio’s announcement video before dryly remarking: “You go for soaring background music like that when there is a palpable lack of excitement.” He continued to say “three-quarters of New Yorkers don’t want him to run,” and that “he’s not showing up to work…he seems utterly disinterested in the job of running America’s largest big city.”
Since Pete Buttigieg is still polling reasonably well in the crowded field of Democrats pursuing the White House, Avlon guessed that de Blasio sees the South Bend mayor’s place in the polls as “really frustrating and kind of insulting to [his] sense of entitlement.”
“That’s not a sufficient reason to get in. His aides have been trying to dissuade him from getting in,” Avlon said. “Bill de Blasio seems to be running because its a YOLO campaign rather than because of people rallying around him.”
Former White House press secretary Joe Lockhart was on the panel with Avlon, and he agreed that de Blasio’s run is an “absurd ego trip” and not much else.
