After CNN’s Erin Burnett called President Trump a hypocrite on transparency tonight, CNN’s Jim Sciutto followed up in the next hour by questioning the president’s apparent hypocrisy on his trips to Mar-a-Lago.
Sciutto, filling in tonight on AC360, brought up past clips of Trump not only saying that he “like[s] working” and plans to “be in the White House a lot,” but criticizing former President Barack Obama for taking so many trips and for golfing so much.
And so, given how much time Trump has spent at Mar-a-Lago and playing golf in just his first 100 days, Sciutto asked former Congressman Jack Kingston, “How do you defend that?”
Kingston argued that Trump is still “out there working” while he’s golfing, saying the people he’s playing with are really just “there for business.”
Sciutto pressed him on Trump’s own past statements and Kingston said he believes the president is a “workaholic” and him criticizing Obama was maybe “campaign rhetoric.”
Maria Cardona said it’s not news that Trump is a “lying, hypocritical flip-flopper,” but the issue here is the cost of all those trips and how it’s “the most expensive taxpayer-funded commercial for his own properties.”
Steve Deace, meanwhile, pointed out there’s certainly a political dimension to all this, given how both Republicans and Democrats reacted differently when Obama went on trips and played golf.
