CNN’s Toobin: Cohen Sentence Is ‘A Message That People Around the President Are Going to Prison’

CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin said Wednesday that former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen‘s sentence is a signal that people close to the president are going to serve time for crimes.

“It’s a serious sentence,” Toobin said of Cohen’s three year jail sentence, announced Wednesday by a federal judge, for financial crimes and lying to Congress. “Under federal law, you always have to serve 85% of what you get. So he’s looking at at least two-and-a-half years in prison. For a white collar sentence, that’s a lot.”

“It is also a message that people around the president are going to prison,” Toobin continued. “I mean, you know, if a year ago, you had told any of us that Michael Cohen would be going to prison, we would all have been flabbergasted. I mean, this guy was really close to the president. For a decade. But because this has been in the news so much, we’ve sort of lost our ability to be shocked. But it’s worth remembering, this is pretty shocking.”

Cohen reportedly held back tears in court as the judge announced his sentence. “My weakness could be characterized as a blind loyalty to Donald Trump,” he told the courtroom.
