CNN’s Toobin: No Political Pressure on Democrats to Cave on Wall Because Trump Lost on Issue in Midterms

CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin today wondered why there would be any political pressure on the Democrats to give in to President Donald Trump‘s border demands after how the midterms turned out.

The President today talked about the shutdown while in Iraq, saying he’s willing to do “whatever it takes” to get the wall.

CNN’s Dana Bash said on The Situation Room today Trump is approaching this as a businessman and “marketer,” particularly given his comments about going to a ground-breaking at the border.

Toobin jumped in and recalled the campaign rhetoric about the border:

“I just remembered, too, that the main pitch that Donald Trump made during the 2018 campaign was, ‘I’m going to build a wall, I’m going to be tough on immigration.’ And he lost 40 seats in the House of Representatives. So why are those new legislators afraid of him talking about the wall constantly? It was a failed political effort during the campaign. And I don’t see any political pressure on the Democrats to concede on this issue.”
