CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin, like many others today, took a very dim view of Gary Cohn resigning today and not after President Trump‘s comments about Charlottesville:
“Gary Cohn made a big show of being disgusted with the President’s behavior after Charlottesville… he said, ‘Oh, I might resign over the President’s racism.’ Well, he managed to stomach the racism. What he couldn’t take was tariffs. If you want to weigh the moral imperatives of the two, it doesn’t reflect all that well on Gary Cohn.”
There was a lot of reporting at the time about Cohn being disgusted at what Trump said and being ready to resign, but he hung on until today in the middle of a fierce D.C. debate over the President’s recent announcement on tariffs.
Trump made clear this week he wants to go through with the tariffs, despite pushback from congressional Republicans and Cohn, among others.
Toobin also noted that of all the people who came into the White House on January 20th, 2017, not that many people outside of “Jared and Ivanka” are left.
