CNN’s Toobin: Trump Keeps Digging a Deeper Hole ‘With the Assistance of His Lawyers’
CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin said President Trump‘s lawyers probably shouldn’t be helping him make things worse for himself.
Toobin told Dana Bash that if Trump knew Flynn lied to the FBI and then spoke to James Comey about laying off him, “that very clearly, I think, establishes obstruction of justice.”
Trump lawyer John Dowd, of course, said today that the President “cannot obstruct justice.”
Bash brought this up and then played the infamous clip of Richard Nixon saying, “When the President does it, that means it’s not illegal.”
Dowd has come forward to take the blame for this tweet:
I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI. He has pled guilty to those lies. It is a shame because his actions during the transition were lawful. There was nothing to hide!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 2, 2017
Toobin was amused by this and said, “John Dowd is 76 years old and I don’t think he’s so up on this Twitter thing”:
“One of the things lawyers always tell clients to do is shut up. You can never get in trouble for something you didn’t say. And here, where you have this endless attempt to explain and accuse and examine the underlying conduct, the President keeps digging a hole deeper for himself, this time with the assistance of his lawyers, which is not exactly what lawyers are supposed to do.”
