President Barack Obama was the latest to hop upon the criminal justice reform bandwagon in a speech to the NAACP yesterday. CNN commentator and former Obama administration official Van Jones noticed.
“President Obama, god bless him, is behind the curve,” he said on CNN’s New Day Wednesday morning. “Republicans have actually endorsed every one of these ideas ahead of him.”
Jones praised the varying reform efforts Governors Rick Perry (R-TX), Nathan Deal (R-GA), and John Kasich (R-OH), though some of these and other GOP governors have overseen massive prison privatization efforts.
“The politics of this have changed so much,” Jones said. “Newt Gingrich…said the prison system has become something conservatives can no longer support because it’s a big, failed, government bureaucracy sucking up money, stealing liberty, and gets more money the worse job it does…When President Obama steps to the plate on it, it changes the entire conversation, makes it even bigger.”
