Colbert Can’t Help but Love the Idaho GOP’s Biker Candidate Harley Brown
Last night, Stephen Colbert finally got around to covering the Idaho Republican gubernatorial debate and its break-out biker candidate Harley Brown. While Colbert has pledged his allegiance to incumbent governor Butch Otter, who won the primary on Tuesday, he couldn’t help but be “charmed” by Brown.
Mostly, Colbert got out of the way and let Brown, and fellow Otter alternative Walt Bayes, do the heavy lifting. Many of their positions and comments were so outrageous that any jokes from the host just felt superfluous. Colbert was behind most of Brown’s statement, but didn’t like when the candidate said gay people love each other more than he loves his motorcycle. “As a conservative, I did not expect to hear pro-gay sentiments from a burly man in a tiny leather hat and vest.”
Ultimately, Colbert said Idaho might need to find an even more extreme candidate for the general election, who can beat not only Governor Otter but also the Democratic nominee, “potato with a mustache.”
