“Can we talk about the election for a second?” Stephen Colbert asked his audience at the top of his first desk segment as host of CBS’ Late Show, proving he won’t be giving up on the political coverage that made him the comedian he is today.
“I know, as the Late Show host, I have huge responsibilities,” he added. “And even though I have Jeb Bush on the show tonight, I promise you that, just like the rest of the media, I will be covering all of the presidential candidates… who are Donald Trump.”
Using Trump’s denunciation of Oreos as a jumping off point, Colbert proceeded to gorge on Trump jokes like most people can’t stop eating cookies. “I’ve got to exercise some discipline,” he said of the GOP frontrunner. “You don’t own me, and I don’t need to play tape of you to have a successful TV show!”
“We don’t have to keep talking about you!” Colbert insisted as he continued to show highlights from the summer of Trump. “Someone on television should have a modicum of dignity, and it could be me!”
More than anything else that happened on the Late Show premiere, this segment reminded us that the host of The Colbert Report has not truly left the building yet.
