Stephen Colbert (along with his Tony Stark-style goatee) was back on the air Monday after a week off for Memorial Day, and he wasted no time tackling the top story of the week. “It’s a great day for America, and I could not be angrier about it,” Colbert said, summing the conflicting feeling among many about the release of U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl in exchange for five Taliban detainees.
After playing a clip of CNN reporting the news, Colbert said, “That’s right, Afghan veteran Bowe Bergdahl is safe, unless he needs to VA health system anytime soon.” Like many conservatives, the host was furious that President Barack Obama released the five Taliban militants. “We can’t release these guys,” he said. “We were this close to charging them with something.”
“It is a victory and a defeat,” Colbert said of the situation, something that has us “pumping our fist with joy, while shaking it in anger.” He explained, “It’s like I’m masturbating a tall man on a trampoline.”
