Colbert on Trump Jr.: ‘A Gun Meeting a Russian Bullet About Their Mutual Desire to Smoke’

On Monday night, Stephen Colbert returned from his vacation and immediately addressed the latest controversy involving Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting with a Russian lawyer back in June 2016.

“There is no evidence of collusion or even the desire to collude with the Russians by anyone in the Trump campaign… is something that was true 48 hours ago,” Colbert began.

He pointed out that in the initial report that “at least some in the campaign were willing to accept Russian help.”

“So, it’s not a smoking gun,” he reacted. “but it is a gun meeting a Russian bullet about their mutual desire to smoke.”

The Late Show host then ripped Trump Jr.’s shifting explanations.

“We’re supposed to believe that during the height of the presidential campaign, on the advice of a guy he met at the Miss Universe agent,” Colbert continued before delving into this dialogue between Trump Jr. and Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort.

Trump Jr.: “Hey Jared, Paul, I know you guys are a little busy right now, but I need you to come to a meeting.”

Kushner/Manafort: “With who?”

Trump Jr.: “I don’t know.”

Kushner/Manafort: “About what?”

Trump Jr.: “I’m not telling you.”

Kushner/Manafort: “Okay, we’re in.”

Colbert then went on to talk about the Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya (or her Bond Girl name, “Corruption Galore”) and how according to Trump Jr., “her statements were vague, ambiguous, and made no sense.”

“So I assume she was immediately hired as a Trump speech writer,” he quipped.

He then mocked Trump Jr. for admitting he was duped by the adoption talk instead of talking about the dirt on Hillary Clinton that he was promised.

“So the excuse is, ‘I tried to collude but I didn’t get anything,'” Colbert continued. “That’s like saying, ‘Yes Your Honor, I broke into the house, but there was nothing worth stealing, so when you think about it, they were robbing me.'”

He finally mocked the idea that President Trump “knew nothing of the meeting.”

“So we’re supposed to believe that Donald Trump had no idea what was happening at the highest levels of his own campaign… Yeah, it checks out,” Colbert smirked.
