Colbert Rips Trump Admin For Proposal Defining Gender on ‘Biological Basis’: ‘Oh, Now You Care About Science!’
Stephen Colbert blasted the Trump administration over a proposal that would redefine the legal definition of “gender.”
Colbert began by calling it a “random act of cruelty” and that the administration “spun the wheel of discrimination” and “landed on transgender” over a report from The New York Times about how the government is considering “narrowly defining gender as a biological, immutable condition determined by genitalia at birth” and that, as the NYT suggests in its headlines, transgender “could be defined out of existence.”
“You can’t just redefine something to make it go away!” Colbert exclaimed. “I learned that the hard way when I tried to convince everyone in high school my nickname ‘Skidmark’ was because of all the cool driving moves I did.”
The Late Show host then noted the administration’s defense of the proposal, saying that gender should be determined “on a biological basis that is clear, grounded in science…”
“Oh, now you care about science!” Colbert reacted. “Wow! How convenient!”
Colbert warned his audience that if the proposal was approved, discrimination against transgender people would be “okayed” across government agencies.
“Look, gender is clearly a spectrum, okay?” Colbert continued. “For instance, I identify as a man, but it’s a little fluid. I enjoy getting my hands dirty and repairing boats. But then again, my favorite book is about elves and jewelry.”
