Stephen Colbert took some shots at White House Chief of Staff John Kelly for his remarks about the Civil War.
During an interview with Laura Ingraham while discussing the taking down of Confederate statues, Kelly said it’s a “mistake” to take what people see as acceptable today and apply it back then.
“Nope, sorry. A lot of people thought slavery was bad back then,” Colbert reacted. “For example, I’m gonna go on a limb here- black people.”
The Late Show host mocked Kelly for thinking that a “lack of compromise” led to the Civil War.
“What do you mean there was a ‘lack of compromise?!?” Colbert exclaimed. “The Civil War happened because there was compromise; The Missouri Compromise, the Three-Fifths Compromise. You’re a general and you don’t know why the Civil War happened?!? What do you think caused WWII, a zoning issue?!?”
Colbert suggested that “maybe” Kelly knows better but was being “willfully ignorant” because he’s “forced to defend the positions of an idiot.”
“But we cannot judge Kelly by today’s standards… he said it yesterday,” Colbert quipped.
