Colbert to Sarah Huckabee Sanders: If Kids in Cages is Too Much For You To Defend, ‘You Could Resign’
Stephen Colbert has some tough words for Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders amid the fiery debate over the separation of illegal immigrant families at the southern border.
“There are two ways to look t this story, either you could be horrified or you could work for Donald Trump,” Colbert told his audience.
It was reported that Sanders did not want to attend the briefing on Monday afternoon and face questions about the recently-implemented “zero tolerance” policy at the border, having Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen address them instead. Sanders firmly denied the report.
However, that wasn’t good enough for Colbert.
“Sarah, you think you don’t want to talk about child separation policy? Try doing it on a comedy show!” Colbert exclaimed. “‘Oh, you must love the Trump administration, Stephen. The sadness just writes itself.'”
“Listen up: You don’t get to tag out here, Sarah, because it’s not really you up there,” he continued. “You’re just Donald Trump’s mouthpiece, or whatever part the lies come out of. And it’s not personal! It’s not personal!”
The Late Show host then called Sarah Huckabee Sanders the “vehicle” and compared her to a “vestigial twin that just grew out of Trump’s neck last summer.”
“So, your administration owns locking up children, but if kids in cages is too much for you to defend, there is one option: You could resign,” Colbert suggested to Sanders. “This is the White House, not an abandoned Walmart. You’re allowed to leave.”
