Comey: I Took Trump’s Request to Drop Flynn Investigation as a ‘Direction’

Senator James Risch (R- ID) pressed James Comey this morning over President Trump‘s comment to him that he “hopes’ he can let the Michael Flynn investigation go.

Risch said, “He did not direct you to let it go.”

Comey replied, “Not in his words, no.”

Hoping for something, the senator argued, is not the same as obstruction of justice.

The former FBI director offered this response:

“The reason I keep saying ‘his words’ is I took it as a direction. I mean, this is the President of the United States with me alone saying I hope this, I took it as this is what he wants me to do. I didn’t obey that, but that’s the way I took it.”
