Conan O’Brien returned to the NBC studio at Rockefeller Center last night in a surprise walk-on comedy bit on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. O’Brien had basically hosted the very same show now hosted by Jimmy Fallon for 16 years, and was received warmly with a standing ovation by the studio audience. The overall bit was more sweet than funny — sort of like the end of a a funny episode of The Simpsons or Modern Family — but no less satisfying.
There is no need to rehash the drama that unfolded over the last two years that saw Conan replace Jay Leno, only to have then be replaced by Leno. And there have been many stories (and a documentary film) that have explored the depths of O’Brien’s emotional roller coaster engendered by that period. So maybe O’Brien has entered a healing phase, evidenced by his return to the scene of his start in Late Night television.
