Congressman Sean Maloney Slams His Own Party For Electoral Woes: Democrats Have ‘Been Failing Miserably’
Representative Sean Maloney (D-NY) had a really frank moment on Tuesday when he said Democrats need to pull themselves together if they want to stand a chance in the midterm elections.
Maloney appeared with former Republican Rep. David Jolly on Stephanie Ruhle‘s MSNBC show Tuesday. The three speculated about what turnout might be like if the elections become a referendum on Donald Trump. Jolly said he suspects Republicans could have a hard time because of dissatisfaction with the president.
Maloney, however, wasn’t so optimistic that his party would cash in.
“We’ve been failing miserably,” Maloney said.. “The Democratic Party better get its backbone back, and better get off the couch and get in the game.”
Maloney spoke of how elections have consequences because “we’ve been getting our butt kicked in Washington.” The congressman pointed to the GOP blocking Merrick Garland from the Supreme Court, which he called a “disgrace” as direct result of losing the 2016 election.
When Ruhle pressed him on how Democrats can present a better deal than what the Trump Administration can offer, Maloney said his party needs to focus on new ideas that can improve the lives of everyday Americans.
“The truth is we want to address those concerns, not exploit them,” he said, “but we have to win this election.”
