Congresswoman: Afghanistan War Is “An Epic Failure, A National Embarrassment”
Representative Lynn Woolsey, a Democrat from California, spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives today and was eager to speak to the new Republican leadership to see if they were really serious about ending business as usual. She knew however, on the issue of the war in Afghanistan, the Republican majority was embracing the status quo on the “disastrous” war that has lasted nearly a decade.
Woolsey claimed that the war has cost America nearly $366 billion and that the majority of Americans believe the war in Afghanistan is not worth fighting, yet the “new congressional majority is interested in no change whatsoever.” Woolsey continued to express her disappointment:
This war represents an epic failure, a national embarrassment and a moral blight on our nation. . . . So i can’t think of anything more patronizing than to tell [Americans] not to worry their pretty little heads about the war, that us grown-ups in Washington have it all taken care of.
The important issue of Afghanistan is rarely discussed these days, so it’s at least interesting for the war to get some spotlight. Yet given that President Obama’s current war strategy is a rare issue where Republicans are aligned with the President, it seems likely the status quo is exactly what Woolsey can continue to expect.
