On the night of June 9, 2016, then-candidate Donald Trump promised that he would deliver a “major Hillary speech” where he would be “discussing all of the things that have taken place with the Clintons.”
The announcement came only a few hours after Donald Trump Jr. confirmed a meeting with a Russian lawyer who allegedly promised him dirt on the Hillary Clinton campaign.
Former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski sat down with MSNBC‘s Chuck Todd on Thursday to discuss that “major speech,” and the fallout from the Donald Trump Jr. meeting with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya.
Lewandowski claimed that the campaign did not do any opposition research on primary opponents but once Trump became the presumptive nominee, they needed to gather information on the Clinton campaign.
Todd pressed Lewandowski about the timing of the announcement of the speech and his son’s meeting.
“He talks about he’s going to make a speech the following Monday to tick through Hillary Clinton’s crimes,” Todd said. “Now, he never makes that speech. Where did that come from?”
Lewandowski seemed to imply that candidate Trump may have made the announcement without actually having any dirt at the time or even anticipating having anything on Hillary Clinton.
“Look, the president has said things on many occasions to elicit responses from his opponents and from the media so that they cover this,” he said.
“So he had no intention on giving a speech about Hillary Clinton when he said it?” Todd asked.
“It was the first time I had heard it,” Lewandowski replied, suggesting that he was not privy to the information that Trump had planned on delivering a speech divulging the results of opposition research that had been done on the Clinton campaign.
Todd asked Lewandowski if he has been contacted by Special Counsel or the Senate or House intelligence investigation.
“Chuck, I have nothing to hide,” replied Lewandowski. “Let me say this, let me be very clear. I never colluded, cooperated or contacted any Russians that I’m aware of. Nobody contacted me that I am aware and asked to help solicit or fix a presidential campaign. But let me be as clear as I can be. If anybody, and I mean anybody, did something with a foreign government that materially impacted the outcome of this election, that person should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law, whoever that person is because we cannot have individuals who are meddling with foreign governments to potentially impact the election.”
