Former CNN President Klein Discusses Trying to Poach Olbermann From MSNBC
CNN’s former president not only had nice things to say about Fox News today. He also reserved some praise for MSNBC. In an interview with HuffPost Live, Jon Klein spoke publicly for the first time about his attempt to get Keith Olbermann to move from MSNBC to CNN shortly after he took over the network.
Klein said that if he had been successful, “it would have made things a lot more difficult for MSNBC, because he was the only thing that was really working at the time.” He went on to explain that it was through Olbermann’s show that MSNBC discovered Rachel Maddow, who is now regularly their highest-rated anchor. While true, it is also true that MSNBC’s ratings have only increased since Olbermann’s departure.
In his interview today, Klein appeared to reiterate his regret about not being able to get CNN President Jim Walton to sign off on that move: “hindsight — well, in that case it was foresight” is 20/20.
