Daily News Editor-in-Chief on CNN: What Gun Lobby Does ‘Is a Form of Terrorism’
CNN’s Brian Stelter confronted the editor-in-chief of the New York Daily News over the paper’s recent provocative front pages about gun control, terrorism, and Donald Trump. It started off with the big post-San Bernardino headline “GOD ISN’T FIXING THIS.”
From there, they’ve been on quite a roll, with a provocative cover calling NRA executive Wayne LaPierre a terrorist, a mock-“Everything is Awesome” cover in response to the blowback they got over the previous covers, and, just last week, a variation of an infamous anti-Nazi poem above a cartoon of Trump beheading the Statue of Liberty.
Stelter asks Jim Rich very bluntly, “Is there such a thing as too far for the Daily News?”
Rich insisted they weren’t “condemning God, religion, or prayer” with the prayers cover, and argued that anyone who’s offended should be far more offended by how politicians are “hiding behind prayer and these meaningless platitudes.”
On the labeling of LaPierre as a terrorist, Stelter asked if that might be considered “hate speech.”
Rich said that’s a little extreme and said they were making a point about not covering terrorism at the expense of gun control. “The stonewalling and the bait-and-switch that goes on,” he said, “from the lobby he represents, to us, is a form of terrorism because it terrorizes the safety of innocent American people.”
