Daily Show Airs Controversial Confrontation Between Redskins Fans, Native Americans
Jon Stewart on The Daily Show responded Thursday to a recent claim by a group of people who said they were misled by the Comedy Central program.
The Washington Post reported on several Washington Redskin fans who said they were duped by The Daily Show. The fans said they participated in the show to defend the NFL team from critics who say it should change its controversial name. The fans said they were were unexpectedly confronted by a group of hostile people in favor of the name change, all of them Native Americans.
“If we find out that someone in a piece was intentionally misled or if their comments were intentionally misrepresented, we do not air that piece,” said Stewart. “We would not air that piece. So that being said, I hope you enjoy the following piece.”
The package featuring Redskins fans and critics of the team’s name then aired.
It did show the group of Native Americans entering the room that the Redskin fans were in, after one of the fans had said the controversy should be settled with the groups addressing one another.
Video of the confrontation aired on the show but none of the audio from the conversation was played.
