Daily Show‘s Jessica Williams Hilariously Corners a Chaplain About His Anti-Trans Views

While many have lamented that The Daily Show status these days is not the stuff of the Jon Stewart old guard, one of the longtime reliable correspondents — Jessica Williams — has continued to do excellent work in her remote comedic segments. Take Wednesday night’s episode for example. Williams, who regularly appeared as a correspondent long before host Trevor Noah took over the show, wonderfully messed with an anti-trans activist of sorts — an “Elmer Fudd lookalike” — named Chaplain Gordon James Klingenschmitt.

The recurring examples of violence, threats, and mistreatment of the transgender community were at the heart of Williams’ segment, which opened up with a telling interview with Meagan Taylor. Taylor, a trans-woman, was put in prison after she checked into an Iowa hotel and quickly raised undue suspicions with the facility staff.

But it was the interview with the Chaplin who regularly uses his pulpit to speak out against the evils of the trans community that really makes the segment worthwhile. Williams digs in, asking Klingenschmitt, “Is it fair to say that because you’re a priest that you’re a pedophile?”

KLINGENSCHMITT: Well of course not.

WILLIAMS: Why is it ‘of course not’? Why?

KLINGENSCHMITT: Because some people are criminals and some people are not criminals.

WILLIAMS: Could you take that logic and apply it to the transgender community?

KLINGENSCHMITT: They’re apples and oranges.

WILLIAMS: By apples and oranges, do you mean apples and apples?

“Hopefully they can understand that we are striving to become a more authentic version of ourselves after a lot of soul searching and a lot of thought and sometimes a lot of trauma and tragedy,” comments one of the trans-women Williams meets with.
