Mediaite founder and ABC News chief legal analyst Dan Abrams appeared on This Week this morning to break down the important lingering questions from last week’s news on not just the two big indictments in the Mueller investigation, but on George Papadopoulos‘ guilty plea.
Preet Bharara said there’s no question “the Mueller team takes very seriously being lied to,” telling George Stephanopoulos, “The FBI agents don’t like that. It undermines their ability to get the truth out and to hold people accountable. Lying to the FBI is a form of obstruction.”
Ken Starr agreed that while Papadopoulos seems like a “real wannabe,” “the point that reaches me that is so powerful: don’t lie to the FBI.”
Abrams said there are a lot of questions that need to be answered here, especially this one:
“And the question remains, why did Papadapoulos lie? Why, in this context, was he covering up? Now, the answer may be he didn’t want to admit it. He didn’t want to come clean. He didn’t want to talk what about he was doing. But there’s a bigger question that has to be answered.”
And, as he added, it’s been made clear “this is a small part of a larger investigation.”
