Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton, the sole, Democratic delegate from the District of Columbia, spoke to reporters Monday afternoon about the deadly mass shooting that occurred earlier in the day at the Washington, D.C. Navy Yard. Norton began by comparing the incident to 9/11, before clarifying that this type of event “doesn’t take a terrorist” when guns are so easily accessible in this country.
“We’ve not had a day like this since 9/11 for good reasons,” Norton said, speaking for the city of Washington, D.C. After saying her “prayers” are with those who have died, the congresswoman said, “We cannot know what happened here yet. But I hope that we will reserve judgment until a thorough investigation is done.”
Asked to explain her 9/11 comparison, Holmes clarified that it “doesn’t compare.” She said, “There is no indication this was a terrorist event. But I hope we all understand that with all these guns loose in the society, it doesn’t take a terrorist to do what was done here today.”
