Dem Rep.: Don’t Let ISIS Goad U.S. into Another Occupation of Iraq
Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) told New Day’s Kate Bolduan that while the United States should continue to supply military aid to the Iraqi government in its fight against ISIS, it also needed to protect against mission creep, especially with ISIS attempting to goad the U.S. into committing more ground troops.
“We have to be very careful not to allow ourselves to be sucked in to another military occupation in Iraq,” Schiff said, stressing the need for continued political reform within Iraq and attacking sources of ISIS’ funding. “It’s a very difficult and slippery slope. We’ve already seen the mission expand, but I think that keeping our focus on those limited objectives at this point is very important.”
Schiff also warned against ISIS using actions like the beheading of captured American journalist James Foley to goad the U.S. into a military confrontation.
“We shouldn’t allow this horrible act to provoke us into doing things that are counterproductive,” he said. “There’s nothing that ISIS would like more than having us reintroduce ground troops in Iraq.”
