Democratic Congressman Eliot Engel sat down with CNN’s Michael Smerconish this morning and defended Israel against what Smerconish cited as a slight rise in public opinion against Israel in its continuing conflict in Gaza. Engel blamed the media for being unfair to Israel and picking on them when far more devastation is being wrought in Syria.
Engel argued that Israel is just trying to protect its citizens, but a large chunk of the public may not see if thusly because “the media has been absolutely unfair to Israel, not only in the United States, but around the world.”
And Engel even said it’s unfair to blame Israel in particular for casualties when they’re not the biggest offender of such.
“We talk about the casualties in Gaza, which are horrific. But every day in Syria, there are more and more casualties, more than in Gaza. You don’t really hear about that. Somehow Israel gets picked on all the time.”
He acknowledged that of course showing pictures of dead children in Gaza influences public opinion, but “some of the media have not been very even-handed or responsible” in how they present them.
