Dem Sen. Menendez Hits Trump Over Summit Collapse in Hearing: ‘Diplomacy is Harder Than The Art of the Deal’
When Secretary of State Mike Pompeo appeared before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations today, he faced an avalanche of questions and cynicism over the cancelled summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Pompeo recently met with the North Korean dictator and was highly-involved in the planning for the denuclearization talks — from which the U.S. officially withdrew on Thursday. Shortly after Pompeo delivered his opening statements, Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) used his time to hammer Trump — saying the president botched a major diplomatic opportunity while rendering Pompeo’s efforts all for naught.
“The art of diplomacy is harder than the Art of the Deal. The reality is that it’s pretty amazing that the administration might be shocked that north Korea is acting as North Korea might very well normally act. While we applaud the robust diplomatic efforts to try to denuclearize the Korean peninsula, many of us were deeply concerned that the lack of deep preparation that is necessary before such a summit is even agreed to was not taking place, and now we see the consequences of that. I’m not sure that constantly quoting the Libya model is the diplomatic way to try to get to the results that we seek in North Korea because that didn’t work out too well for Muammar Gadhafi. So I look forward to having an opportunity and other members will to discuss that further.”
