Dem Senator Jack Reed Excoriates Trump on Khashoggi Response: ‘He Seems to Be a Captive of the Saudis’
Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) called President Donald Trump a “captive” of Saudi Arabia on Friday as he slammed the president for siding with them over the CIA on the matter of Jamal Khashoggi‘s murder.
Reed gave an interview to CNN, during which he was asked to respond to Trump’s triple-down on his decision to back the Saudis and dispute the findings of the American intelligence community. Reed pointed out that the CIA’s “high confidence” marker for their Khashoggi findings is the highest rank of accuracy they can give to their analysis, and thus, he wondered about the nature of the president’s “arrangement” with the Saudis.
“He’s put himself in a compromised position where he can’t look at the intelligence reports in a detached, objective way, make a conclusion, and then introduce evidence and introduce policies to effect a better outcome,” Reed said. “He seems to be a captive of the Saudis, actually.”
Even though the U.S. has sanctioned 17 Saudi Arabian government operatives who were allegedly involved in the murder, Trump’s latest official statement suggests he will not directly punish the Saudi royal family over this matter.
