During a CNN New Day interview Thursday morning, Democratic Senator Chris Coons bucked the party line and criticized former president Bill Clinton and Attorney General Loretta Lynch‘s decision to meet on a private plane for half an hour Tuesday.
Host Alisyn Camerota asked the Delaware senator whether it was “appropriate” for Clinton and Lynch to meet behind closed doors, giving the ongoing FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton‘s email. “What do you think about the impropriety, or the appearance of that?” she asked.
Coons prefaced his remarks by saying how much he respected Lynch.“She has generally shown excellent judgment and strong leadership in the department. I’m convinced she’s an independent attorney general,” he opined.
That said, “I do think this meeting sends the wrong signal. I think she should have steered clear, even of a brief, casual social meeting with the former president.”
“She should have said, ‘No, thank you, I’m not available to meet right now’?” asked Camerota.
“I think she should have said, ‘Look, I recognize you have a long record of leadership on fighting crime, but this is not the time for us to have that conversation. After the election is over, I’d welcome your advice and input,’” Coons suggested.
