The Democratic party autopsy is already underway, and Senator Chris Coons weighed in on CNN today about the self-evaluation his party needs to be doing.
Jake Tapper asked him about the current debate among Democrats about whether the party has been too exclusive to working class Americans. As Joe Biden recently put it, “These are good people, man! These aren’t racists, these aren’t sexists.”
Coons recalled big Democratic losses in decades past and how they showed how far the party “got off-track” and didn’t engage enough with those “Reagan Democrats.”
He said there are obviously lots of people who voted for Trump who aren’t part of the “so-called deplorables,” and considering how there were Obama voters that switched to Trump, Coons said that his party needs to do more to speak to them.
