Democratic Lawmaker To MSNBC: My GOP Colleagues Acted Like Taliban During Abortion Debate
This weekend on MSNBC’s The Ed Show, Wisconsin State Sen. Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee) compared her Republican state colleagues to the Taliban for their actions in last week’s explosive abortion legislation debate.
As we reported last Wednesday, the Wisconsin Senate descended into chaos while voting upon a bill that would make ultrasound scans mandatory for women seeking an abortion. After Kathleen Vinehout (D-Alma) read off letters from female constituents decrying the proposed legislation, Senate President Mike Ellis (R-Neenah) effectively shut down debate in the Senate, calling for a vote while pounding his gavel and shouting down his Democratic colleagues who demanded further debate.
In response to the ordeal, Taylor took to MSNBC to tell Ed Schultz that, upon shutting down debate, the Republican leaders behaved just like the Taliban.
“The war on women is alive and well,” she told Schultz. ”Anti-women legislation has been their priority. Not creating jobs. We were silenced that day. The president broke his gavel. The women in the assembly were escorted out.”
She continued: “This is no different than what I experienced when I went to Turkey and heard of what the women in the Middle East are experiencing with the Taliban, trying to silence them for being at the table,” she said. “This was a similar kind of bullying experience.”
