House Democratic Caucus Chairman and Hillary Clinton VP shortlister Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-CA) has become just the latest politician to call presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump a racist, but in an interview with the Morning Joe crew Wednesday morning, Becerra also had a message for Republicans like Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI), who have continued to support Trump despite recognizing his “textbook racism.”
MJ regular Mike Barnicle flatly asked Rep. Becerra “Do you think Donald Trump is a racist?”, and Becerra initially replied that he believes Trump is a “bigoted man,” but quickly escalated from there:
I believe based on remarks that he is a bigoted man. I believe that if he is unwilling to say he apologizes for racist things he says, he should be classified as a racist. Any Republican who says his remarks are racist, but still wants to endorse him for president, has to recognize they are asking America to elect a racist to be president of the United States.
Becerra also weighed in predictably on the Hillary Clinton Veepstakes, speaking highly of possibilities like Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), HUD Secretary Julian Castro, Secretary of Labor Tom Perez, and acknowledged his own position on the list. He also put in a good word for former Senator Ken Salazar (D-CO).
