Ladies and gentleman of Congress start your engines, because the clock is ticking and there isn’t much time to waste for anyone to voice their opposition to the tentative debt deal announced last night by President Obama. Democratic Congressman, chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus and United Methodist minister, Emanuel Cleaver, appeared on MSNBC last night and vented his strong disapproval of what he sees, concluding “if I were a Republican, this is a night to party.”
Cleaver also described for MSNBC host Chris Jansing just how much he truly despised this “deal”:
“If you lift the bun, what you see is antithetical to everything the great religions of the world teach. Which is take care of the poor, take of the aged. . . . I am concerned about this because we don’t know the details. And until we see the details, we’re going to be extremely non-committed, but on the surface it looks like a Satan sandwich.”
Besides putting a colorful description on the table, Cleaver highlights a potentially significant problem for Obama. Might liberal idealists now be the ones resistant to saying “yes” to compromise?
