Democratic Rep. on Trump Going to Civil Rights Museum: He ‘Fans the Flames of Racial Hatred’

Congressman Hakeem Jeffries said on CNN today he supports the boycott of President Trump‘s attendance at the opening of a civil rights museum in Mississippi tomorrow.

John Lewis, a congressman and civil rights icon, said he won’t attend the opening yesterday, calling the President’s planned appearance an “insult.” Fellow Congressman Bennie Thompson will not be going either.

On CNN earlier tonight, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries told Wolf Blitzer he supports their actions, saying, “This is not even a close call.”

He contrasted the records of both Lewis and Thompson with “the birther-in-chief––someone who has never missed an opportunity to fan the flames of racial hatred whenever he thinks it’s to his personal, political, or professional advantage.”

Jeffries recalled Trump’s history on things like the Central Park Five, the “racist lie” about Barack Obama‘s birthplace, and the response to Charlottesville.
