Dick Durbin Doubles Down: Pompeo Said ‘Ask the White House’ Why Gina Haspel Didn’t Attend Saudi Briefing
Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) is standing by his view that the White House gagged Gina Haspel from speaking to him and and his colleagues.
In a Thursday interview for MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Durbin took questions about his frustration with Haspel’s absence from the Senate’s briefing this week on Saudi Arabia and the death of Jamal Khashoggi. While the CIA insists that the White House did not prevent their director from attending the briefing, Durbin says Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary James Mattis strongly implied to him that the opposite was true.
“I want to be precise,” Durbin said. “I believe what [Pompeo] said is ‘ask the White House’ when we asked why isn’t the CIA director there?”
Haspel’s absence is noteworthy since President Trump is rejecting the CIA’s “high confidence” assessment that the Saudi Royal Family was directly connected to Khashoggi’s murder in Istanbul. Pompeo largely ignored questions from the media about why Haspel wasn’t there to talk about her findings, and Durbin told Willie Geist that her no-show was a missed opportunity for a complete conference about the intelligence community’s information.
