Dick Durbin Says Senators Begged Mattis to Stay: We Counted on Him to Stop Trump from His ‘Worst Impulse’
Speaking with NBC’s Chuck Todd on Meet the Press, Sen. Dick Durbin said he was among a number of Senators who begged outgoing Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis to stay on the job.
“I was one of many senators who privately sat down with Gen. Mattis and said, ‘Please stay, stay as long as you possibly can,’” Durbin told Todd.
He also said senators told Mattis: “We desperately need your mature voice, your patriotism in the room when this president’s making life-or-death decisions about national security.”
Then after noting it obviously reached a breaking point, the senator stressed: “It breaks my heart that he’s going to step aside. We counted on him to be there and to stop this president from his worst impulse.”
On Sunday, Trump announced that he was appointing a new Secretary of Defense as of Jan.1, pushing out Mattis two months before his planned date of resignation.
Meanwhile, it also seems Trump is moving forward with his plans to withdraw troops from Syria and Mattis has already signed the order to set the pullout in motion.
