News outlets everywhere have been awkwardly struggling with how to deal with the transgender status of Pfc. Bradley Manning, now known as Chelsea Manning. But nothing has quite approached what happened during the final hour of Fox & Friends this morning.
During a tease for an upcoming story about Manning’s decision to, in the words of host Gretchen Carlson, “live the rest of his life as a lady,” the 1987 Aerosmith hit “Dude (Looks Like a Lady)” blared in the background, while side by side photos of Manning dressed as a man and as a woman appeared on screen. In case Fox viewers weren’t savvy enough to grasp the implication, the song’s title appeared in the top left corner of the screen before the show cut to commercial.
Perhaps F&F producers just figured, “Hey, it worked on the Mrs. Doubtfire soundtrack, so why not use it to spice up a story about the U.S. army soldier who was just sentenced to 35 years in prison for leaking restricted documents to the public?”
