Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats declined this morning to comment on the report that President Trump reached out to him to ask him to publicly refute the allegation there was any collusion between Russia and his campaign.
There was a big new Washington Post report yesterday saying that Trump reached out to Coats and NSA Director Michael Rogers about this in response to the ongoing FBI probe.
This news came just days after another report that Trump told top Russian officials that after firing “nut job” James Comey, the pressure he’s felt over Russia had been “taken off.”
Senator John McCain asked Coats about yesterday’s report this morning. Coats said this in response:
“I have always believed that given the nature of my position and the information which we share, it’s not appropriate for me to comment publicly on any of that, and so on this topic, as well as other topics, I don’t feel it’s appropriate to characterize discussions and conversations with the president.”
When McCain asked him about all the leaks going on, Coats agreed that they are a serious problem, saying, “Lives are at stake in many instances, and leaks jeopardize those lives.”
