Don Imus Tells Priest The Pope Should ‘Get An Ice Cream Truck’
The cover of Rolling Stone magazine has been dominating political talk for the past few days, and in other news about things that haven’t mattered since the seventies, longtime radio shock jock Don Imus took a square shot, Thursday morning, at the Catholic church’s long history of abetting and covering up the rape and molestation of children. As Fox News contributor Father Jonathan Morris explained new Pope Francis‘ predilection for modest transportation, Imus suggested that “because of all the problems the church has had, get an ice cream truck.”
Father Morris was discussing the new Pope’s suggestion that Catholic clergy drive more humble vehicles. “He’s making me nervous,” Father Morris said. “He chose a 2008 Ford Focus. I’m driving a 2012 Toyota Highlander. It’s getting complicated, put it that way.”
“I suggested, because of all the problems the church has had, get an ice cream truck.”
A smiling Father Morris replied, “I’m trying to think the best of you, Don.”
Imus’ handling of the topic isn’t likely to win him any fans among Catholics who would rather forget about the church’s ugly history. However, it’s also not likely to please those who take the subject seriously, and are happy to remind people of those horrors at every opportunity, but not in such a blithe, trivial manner. The audience for this joke appears to be people who don’t like the Catholic church, but also don’t care that much about children.
