Some people will put anything in their mouths just to get ahead. I’m referring, of course, to Donald Trump, who now admits that his defense of former President Bill Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky affair was only, ahem, lip service. Prior to this presidential campaign, Trump was of the opinion that Clinton’s impeachment over the extramarital affair was “nonsense,” as expressed in this 2008 interview with Wolf Blitzer:
“He lied! [Bush] got us into the war with lies! And, I mean, look at the trouble Bill Clinton got into with something that was totally unimportant, and they tried to impeach him, which was nonsense. And yet Bush got us into this horrible war with lies, by lying!”
However, Trump now expects us to swallow the notion that Bill Clinton’s behavior is relevant fodder with which to attack Hillary Clinton. On Monday morning’s New Day, host Chris Cuomo called Trump out over the contradiction, and Trump fairly boasted that his defense of Clinton was just another day at the office pulling on the levers of power, as it were:
Cuomo: Years ago you said Monica Lewinsky, they shouldn’t have chased after it like this. Bill Clinton’s sex life shouldn’t be an issue. Now it’s a main issue.
Trump: I tried to help them because they were — it was important for me, as secretary of state, as senator, to have all these people on my side, I needed votes for things. I got many things done. I needed votes. I would have these people on my side. I wasn’t going to get involved in the Monica Lewinsky thing. I wouldn’t get involved in it now.
Cuomo: You’re bringing it up.
Trump: I don’t care about Monica Lewinsky other than I think Hillary was an enabler, and a lot of things happened that were seedy. He was impeached for heaven’s sake. He was impeached.
…I would always stick up, as a businessman, stick up for various people whether they were friends or not. In many cases I needed them, their votes, to get things done.
Trump has been banging the Lewinsky drum ever since Hillary Clinton scolded Trump over his remark that Hillary “got schlonged” in the 2008 election, and while it hasn’t hurt him so far, you just never know when one of these things will blow up in your face. Just ask Monica Lewinsky.
