In a move sure to gladden the hearts of everyone who has ever pitched a cable executive on a paint-drying reality competition show, CNN decided to hold an hourlong town hall featuring Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and a studio full of people with a high tolerance for drowsiness and pamphlet-brandishing. There was one moment that approached something akin to amusing when, after Ryan finished explaining why Donald Trump‘s “textbook racism” is totally not a deal-breaker for him, a Donald Trump supporter named Peggy Padavano drew out the most uncomfortable laugh since Gallagher stopped headlining funerals.
Having just explained why he was still supporting Trump despite all the racism, Peggy asked Ryan when he’s going to start supporting Trump:
Peggy: Hi, how are you? I’m disheartened with you and some of the Republican leadership because you haven’t fully gotten behind Donald Trump and his candidacy. I wanted to know when you’re going to start advocating for him. After all, you did endorse him.
Speaker Ryan: Ten seconds ago. (laughs) So, that’s number one. (laughs more)
Ryan went on to say other things and wave his pamphlet at Peggy, but trust me, this was the highlight of the entire hour. You’re welcome.
