‘Don’t Make Me Make the Podium Move!’: Sean Spicer Finally Jokes About SNL Parody
During a Friday press conference, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer finally made a jocular reference to his Saturday Night Live doppelganger.
Spicer was facing a line of questioning about a tweet he posted earlier in the day crowing the good February jobs numbers. A reporter point out that tweet broke an obscure federal rule preventing executive branch employees from commenting on economic reports until an hour later.
Spicer found that question silly. “Don’t make me make the podium move,” he joked to loud laughter. In the Saturday Night Live skit, Melissa McCarthy‘s Spicer terrorizes reporters in a motorized version of the podium.
Reportedly, Spicer wanted to make a joking reference to the skit soon after it came out, perhaps by bringing a water gun to the podium. President Donald Trump killed the idea, being particularly offended that Spicer was portrayed by a woman. Likewise, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway bailed on a meeting with House Republican communications staffers after one of them jokingly asked her about the sketch.
