White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Monday afternoon that President Barack Obama had in fact emailed with then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her tenure at the State Department, when she exclusively used a personal email account.
“Yes, the president was aware of her email address, he traded emails with her,” Earnest said. “That shouldn’t be a surprise that the President of the United States was trading emails with the Secretary of State.”
“But the president was not aware that this was her personal email server and that this was the email address she was using exclusively for all her business. The president was not aware of that until it had been more widely reported.”
Earnest added that the email exchanges were not particularly frequent.
Obama said in an interview with Face the Nation Saturday that he had not known of Clinton’s personal email account, which Clinton hosted on a private email server. “The president was referring specifically to the arrangement associated with the secretary’s email,” Earnest said.
Questions surround not only the archiving of Clinton’s emails with the government, as required by federal law, but also the security of email system; presumably a private server is less secure than one established by the State Department.
