According to evangelical lawyer and Liberty University professor Shawn Akers, atheists would like to “finish the job” Al Qaeda began when it first attacked the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
Speaking with Faith and Freedom radio host Mat Staver, Akers celebrated a recent court decision to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the American Atheists group that sought to prevent Ground Zero debris shaped like a cross from being displayed in the official 9/11 Museum.
Akers called the original lawsuit “religious McCarthyism,” adding that he believes secular groups now seek to “eradicate [religion] in very forthright ways.” He expressed amusement at the “irony” of how “extremists from one religion brought down the Twin Towers, but the atheists are coming in to finish the job.”
The atheist organization sought to prevent the cross from being used in the museum believing that it represents “a violation of both federal and New York law in that public funds will be used to establish the Christian religion on public land.” They plan to appeal the court decision.
