Ex-GOP Strategist Setmayer: ‘The Brand That Trump Brought to the Republican Party is Destroying it From the Core’

Former GOP strategist Tara Setmayer said on CNN Wednesday President Donald Trump‘s control of the Republican party is “destroying” it — and leadership is doing little to stop him.

“I’ve got to be honest I never thought I’d see the day when I was looking forward to Nancy Pelosi getting the gavel again,” Setmayer said on New Day. “Only because I want to see some balance, hoping that Congressional Republicans have learned their lesson and realized that the brand that Trump has brought to the Republican Party is destroying it from the core.”

Setmayer pointed out that some Republicans in the Senate have spoken out against the president’s behavior.

Conservative Daily Beast columnist Matt Lewis

“Unfortunately, I think one of the trends that Donald Trump, as his presidency progresses, is weeding out adults,” Lewis said. “When he first came on, he was still a normal-breaking, chaotic president, but he felt that he had to surround himself with some adults, some people who had gravitas and stature, and he liked the generals and that was good.”

“They’re gone, they’re headed for the exit doors right now,” he said. “So there’s going to be nobody left to restrain Trump.”
