Ex-Republican Rep. Charlie Dent: GOP ‘Owns the Shutdown’ and They Know They ‘Cannot Win’

Former Republican Congressman Charlie Dent ripped his own party for the current government shutdown, saying on CNN that the GOP knows they can’t win the showdown.

Dent said President Donald Trump‘s meeting with Freedom Caucus members Mark Meadows and Jim Jordan about the shutdown on Saturday was “a stinging rebuke of the House Republican leadership.”

“This whole shutdown is so completely unnecessary,” Dent said. “This is so easily averted. The party that makes the policy demand owns the shutdown. And so I think on the Republican side, this is just a fight they cannot win and they know it.”

“Nancy Pelosi has no incentive to negotiate with Republicans between now and her swearing in day on January 3rd, her position only gets stronger and stronger,” he added. “So I don’t understand the point of this thing. It makes absolutely no sense.”

Dent’s bleak outlook for Republicans during this shutdown is in line with the sentiment of Sen. Bob Corker, who said on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday that “this is a made up fight so the President can look like he’s fighting.”
