Female High School Teacher Resigns After Charged With Raping Student

A female math teacher and girls’ basketball team coach in a Riverton, Utah high school has been arrested and charged with raping a 17-year-old female student. Courtney Louise Jarrell, age 22, faces charges of object rape (a first-degree felony) and forcible sexual abuse (a second-degree felony).

Prosecutors claim the sexual activity occurred at Jarrell’s home sometime between February and March 2013. The investigation commenced when the school district received a complaint from a parent about inappropriate behavior. Jarrell taught at the high school for eight months.

Jarrell has resigned and will appear in court on May 16. She plans to plea not guilty.

According to local media reports, students and parents are surprised by the allegations. “Everybody loved her,” said student Kathryn Orchard. “My parents were even way shocked because my parents loved her too. They thought she was a great teacher.”
