Filibuster Part 2? Rand Paul Threatening To Block Harry Reid’s Senate Gun Control Bill
Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has been on a political high ever since he finished his nearly 13-hour-long filibuster against the Obama administration’s drones policy less than three weeks ago. And now, according a letter Paul and his Republican colleagues Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Mike Lee (R-UT) sent to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), he could soon be at it again.
POLITICO’s Jonathan Allen reported Monday that Paul, Cruz and Lee plan to hand-deliver a letter to Reid Tuesday that reads, “We will oppose the motion to proceed to any legislation that will serve as a vehicle for any additional gun restrictions.”
Though Reid disappointed many liberals when he decided to drop the assault weapons ban from the Senate bill, he still plans to put forward a proposal that would strengthen background checks and cut down on interstate gun-trafficking. He also plans to include some measures banning high-capacity clips and certain weapons, which are unlikely to pass.
Paul obtained a relatively large amount of good will from progressive Democrats after his filibuster and has been building on that support with his “libertarian approach” on issues like same-sex marriage and drug decriminalization. If he chooses to spend his political capital filibustering gun control, will he be able to retain these left-leaning fans?
